This pilot project aims to assess the efficacy of James’ Place intervention strategies in a younger population (16- and 17-year-olds), with the aim of reducing suicide amongst young men.
Over the first year of the project, James’ Place in Liverpool has helped 10 young men experiencing suicidal crisis. The outcomes have been positive, with the young men reporting significantly reduced psychological distress.
From the results and feedback so far, the Trust envisage that a significant number of young men will be helped by this project. Trustees met with James’ Place in February 2025 and are delighted to announce that the MWMT will continue to fund The Max Windle Project at James’ Place for a further 6 months. Subsequently, an analysis will be completed by Liverpool John Moores University to review the project’s processes and efficiency, and ongoing discussions will continue between the Max Windle Memorial Trust and James’ Place to ensure that as many young lives are being saved as possible.
Statement from Andy Noon, Head of Centre, James’ Place, Liverpool.
‘We are truly grateful to the Max Windle Memorial Trust for extending the project by six months. Their faith in our work is deeply appreciated, and we are confident that this extension will enable us to support even more young men in crisis. Our goal is to help these young men find hope for the future, play a vital role in their development and mental health journey, and equip them with the tools to navigate life’s challenges—ultimately reducing the likelihood of future crises.
This extension provides a valuable opportunity to help more young men and gather further data. This insight will strengthen our future clinical decisions as we explore expanding our pathway beyond its current provision.’
The outcome of this pilot to date has supported ten young men through suicidal crisis. Not only have ten lives been potentially saved, but ten families, groups of loved ones and friends have not had to live with the heartache of losing someone to suicide.
